President’s Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday in February. While it is in recognition of all Presidents, it is held on this day as it is associated with George Washington’s birthday.  George Washington, known as the “Father of our Nation,” was the first president of the United States and was born on February 22, 1732.

Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States is recognized for ending slavery in the United States by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln was born on February, 12 1809. As both of these well recognized presidents were born in February, they are the most common associated with this holiday. For additional information on all 44 presidents visit: http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/presidents/

The Bald Eagle is also a symbol associated with this day and patriotism for the United States. The image of the Bald Eagle can be found in many places in the United States, such as on the Great Seal, Federal agency seals, the President’s flag, and on the one-dollar bill. The Founding Fathers chose the Bald Eagle as the Symbol of the United States of America because they felt that the bird symbolized strength, courage and freedom.
