Teacher's Corner
Create your own dove while learning how this bird became a universal symbol of peace!
Lesson Objectives
- Around the World: The white dove shares the same symbolic meaning for many cultures around the world. This bird often appears in biblical references, folk tales, and Native American oral tradition. What does the dove symbolize for your students?
- Peace For All: Although a dove holding an olive branch is found in art and literature, there are many other symbols of peace. As a class, share the common signs of peace you and your students see around their community!
Follow-up Discussion
Peace is an especially important topic to discuss during Black History Month. Equality and social justice work hand-in-hand with peace. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.” How can your students set goals for peace?
