The Basics of Plaster of Paris

  • All Ages

Watch this video to learn about the basics of Plaster of Paris and see several project examples using this versatile arts and crafts material. Look below for more step-by-step instructions:

Step 1. Gather your materials

Step 2.

Begin by pouring 1 cup of plaster into a mixing container.

Step 3.

Measure out 1 to 1 1/4 cups of water in a separate measuring cup. Slowly pour the water into the mixing container and mix as you pour. Tip: Different altitudes may change the amount of water you need in this mixture.

Step 4.

Continue mixing until it is the consistency of pancake batter. Tip: Once you have mixed your materials, sprinkle a small amount of plaster on top. If it sits on top, your solution is good to pour. If the plaster sinks, you need to add more plaster as you may have too much water.

Step 5.

Pour the plaster into the desired shape for your craft project. Tip: Make sure to pour plaster onto a shape that is non-porous such as foam, plastic wrap or wax paper.

Step 6.

Plaster of Paris sets in 20 -30 minutes. However, it is best to allow it to dry thoroughly overnight before painting.
