Guest Post: Gingerbread Bird Houses

The following is a Guest Post from Just A Little Creativity, a member of our Craft Project Ideas Blogger Network!

Gingerbread houses go hand in hand with Christmas. Kids and grown-ups alike love building the whimsical, colorful little cottages. Using candies, frosting, and all types of goodies, these houses are magical little creations.

But, have you ever thought about painting wooden birdhouses as gingerbread houses at Christmas? You and your littles can work together to create an entire village that can be displayed year after year.

This year, we took an evening with my 10 year old son and my 7 year old niece to paint & decorate a few. I’m hoping it’ll turn into a new Christmas tradition. It’ll be fun to look back at their younger creations and see how they change over the years.

Step  1.

The kids used supplies sent to me from craftprojectideas.com – wooden birdhouses, iridescent glitter glue, iridescent glitter, and pom-poms. They also used my craft paint and colorful sharpies.

A tip, let the younger children only choose one color at a time, and limit their choices. My kids said decorating their painted houses was the funnest part.

Step  3.

We glued pom-poms to the roof, and used the glitter glue to make designs. In true 7 year old girl style, my niece glittered essentially every surface that the glitter would stick to.

Drawing details with the sharpies was an easy way for them to add details too. Give the houses plenty of time to dry, especially the glitter glue.
