Instructions

Step 1. Gather your supplies.

Step 2.

Cut the lid off one egg carton. Glue the lid upside-down to the top of a second egg carton. This will make the body of the ship.

Step 3.

Cut the lid off the third egg carton. Cut the lid in half.  Cut off a section of 4 cups from the bottom of the third egg carton.

Step 4.

Glue the 4 cup piece upside down to one side of the ship’s body.

Step 5.

Glue the cut egg carton lid on top of the 4 cup piece, as shown. You have now completed the main part of the ship.

Step 6.

Paint the ship brown, adding windows using black paint. Paint (1) skinny stick and (1) wood dowel light brown. Cut out one egg carton cup and paint it brown. Let all the pieces dry.

Step 7.

Have an adult use the heavy duty scissors to punch a hole in the egg carton cup.

Step 8.

Press the wood dowel through the cup, as shown. This will create the crow’s nest for the ship.

Step 9.

Have an adult hot glue the cup to the dowel, so that it won’t slide down.

Step 10.

Cut the paper plates into the shape of sails, making one a little smaller than the other.

Step 11.

Glue the plates to the dowel, underneath the crow’s nest. Overlap the plates and leave some room at the bottom of the dowel to secure to the ship.

Step 12.

Have an adult punch a hole in the ships deck with the scissors.

Step 13.

Insert the dowel in the punched hole to create the mast. Have an adult use the hot glue to secure the mast.

Step 14.

Have an adult hot glue the skinny stick on the ship deck near the mast.

Step 15.

To make the ships steering wheel, cut a small circle out of foam.

Step 16.

Cut out the inside of the foam circle. You will have a wheel, as shown.

Tip- When cutting the middle circle, gently fold the foam in half and make your initial cut from the center, just like you see on step 8 of this telescope project.

Step 17.

Use the heavy duty scissors to cut (3) skinny sticks in half.

Step 18.

Arrange (3) cut skinny sticks in half around the foam circle, as shown, and glue to secure.

Step 19.

To complete, attach a clothespin to the wheel.

Step 20.

Make a ladder by cutting and arranging pieces of the skinny sticks, as shown.

Step 21.

Paint the ladder, and steering wheel light brown.

Step 22.

Finish the details of the ship by gluing the ladder and steering wheel to the ship. Tie pieces of braiding cord from the wood dowel mast to the the skinny stick to represent rigging.
