Teacher's Corner
Build your own craft stick sled and slide into some cool facts about Alaska’s historical Iditarod race!
Lesson Objectives
- The Last Great Race on Earth: This nickname lends itself to the Iditarod Race, which is held annually to commemorate the long journey of a group of mushers, who traveled over 1,000 miles to transport a life-saving medicine from Anchorage to None. What do your students know about this race?
- Racing Buddies: The most impressive part of the Iditarod race are the sled dogs! There racing dogs are specially bred and trained to run long distances together. So, why don’t they get tired? Watch this video and learn the science behind these super-fast furry friends!
Follow-up Discussion
The Iditarod — along with the people and dogs who take the journey — inspire many authors to write about the racing experience. If your students are interested in learning more about this historical topic, guide them toward this list of nonfiction books — you can even suggest a book report for extra credit!
