Materials

  • Natural Braiding Cord
  • Coffee Filters (Plain or Chromatography)
  • Hot Glue Gun ***May Require Adult Assistance
  • Scissors
  • 4 Jump Rings

Instructions

Step 1. Gather your supplies.

Step 2.

Cut (15) 12″ strings out of black braiding cord. Tie them together and separate them into three groups of five, as shown. We’ve created a simple braid, but used groups of 5 strings to make the braid thicker.

Tip: A clipboard is the perfect thing to use to hold your string in place. If you don’t have one readily available, simply tape the end of your bracelet to a flat surface!

Step 3.

Cross the left section over the middle section. Pull tight. The left section is now the middle section.

Step 4.

Cross the right section over the middle section. Pull tight. The right section is now the middle section.

Step 5.

Continue crossing the left and right sections over the middle until you’re happy with the length of the braid, then secure with a knot.

Step 6.

Attach a jump ring to each end of the braid, as shown.

Step 7.

Cut a 24″ piece of black elastic cording.

Step 8.

Attach a jump ring to either end of the cording.

Step 9.

Connect the jump rings from the elastic cording to the braid jump rings. Cut off the excess knots on each end of the braid. Secure the braid by twisting the ends in craft glue instead.

Step 10.

Using either the colored coffee filters from our chromatography experiment or plain coffee filters, pile three on top of each other and fold in half.

Step 11.

Fold the coffee filter into an accordion. Pinch the bottom.

Step 12.

Spread the coffee filters out, one by one and shape them until you like the way your flower looks.

Step 13.

Twist the bottom to secure.

Step 14.

Cut off the twisted bottom point.

Step 15.

Attach the flower to the side of the headband with hot glue to cover one of the pairs of jump rings.
